چکیده

Narrow band slices have been taken of the radio emission spectrum from convective clouds in the frequency range from 30 mc./sec. to 550 mc./sec. and a t 7.5 kc./sec. to monitor long and short range lightning discharges. Despite the careful choice of the bands to avoid interference from manmade sources, a major problem is the identification of spurious noise. I n spite of these interferences, radiation apparently associated with growing convective clouds has been observed from a n aircraft. The number of discharges per km.2 per scc. observed at the different frequencies is a function of receiver sensitivity, suggesting that “atmospherics” vary greatly in spectral intensity. The number of discharges observed generally exceeds previous estimates. A relation between the occurrence of sporadic E and major thunderstorm precipitation areas is reported and evaluated in light of previous observations of the similar rclationships. Together, the concepts suggest a linkage between strong solar flare activity and anomolous thunderstorm rainfall.

Estimating glaciation temperature of deep convective clouds with remote sensing data

[1] Major uncertainties exist for observing and modeling ice content inside deep convective clouds (DCC). One of the difficulties has been the lack of characterization of vertical profiles of cloud hydrometeor phase. Here we propose a technique to estimate the DCC glaciation temperature using passive remote sensing data. It is based on a conceptual model of vertical hydrometeor size profiles in...

Detection of Convective Initiation Using Meteorological Imager Onboard Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite Based on Machine Learning Approaches

As convective clouds in Northeast Asia are accompanied by various hazards related with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, it is very important to detect convective initiation (CI) in the region in order to mitigate damage by such hazards. In this study, a novel approach for CI detection using images from Meteorological Imager (MI), a payload of the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satell...

Ionospheric E region remote sensing with ELF radio atmospherics

Radio remote sensing of the ionospheric E region can be difficult, particularly in the nighttime E region valley which lies between two regions of higher electron density. We show that extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic waves launched from below penetrate this region because of their low attenuation and can be reflected from both the D region and the top of the E region valley. This ...

Remote Sensing Based Retrieval of Snow Cover Properties Case Study (Shirkooh Mountain Yazd, Iran)

Snow cover area is one of the most important criteria to calculate snow melt runoff. This can have an effect on the biology of the plant and the environment of a region. Using the catchment basin physical characteristic to calculate snow cover area is a conventional method, though its accuracy is not good enough. Most of the useful methods in calculating snow cover area are based on satellite i...
